Fears Over Asthma Misdiagnosis Lead To British Lung Foundation Calls For Mass Retesting
The British Lung Foundation is calling for everyone over 35 with Asthma or the progressive illness Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) to be retested following evidence of confusion over diagnosis and treatment of the two respiratory diseases. A survey of 776 GPs from all over the UK carried out for the charity by Doctors.net.uk shows that most have difficulty differentiating between Asthma or COPD, causing misdiagnosis and distress amongst patients.

Re-Launched Allergy Screening Service Hits The Airwaves, National Pharmacy Association, UK
Just under a hundred NPA members are now offering the NPA and Allergy UK Allergy Screening Service. The service which has been recently remodelled to include a "pin prick" test as well as a screen was the subject of radio interviews conducted by regional and local stations across England last week. NPA members were able to give an account of the service in action, highlighting how community pharmacy was improving access to allergy screening.

The American immunologist Dr. William E. Paul has received the Max Delbrück Medal in Berlin. The jury honored the researcher for his work on a key regulator of the immune system, interleukin 4 (IL-4). Dr. Paul works at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. Professor Andreas Radbruch, scientific director of the German Rheuma Research Center Berlin, held the laudatory address.
