Janssen-Cilag International N.V. Withdraws Its Application For An Extension Of Indication For Invega (paliperidone)
The European Medicines Agency (EMEA) has been formally notified by Janssen-Cilag International N.V. of its decision to withdraw its application for an extension of indication for the centrally authorized medicine Invega (paliperidone) prolonged-release tablets. Invega was expected to be used for the treatment of acute manic episodes associated with bipolar I disorder. Invega was first authorised in the European Union on 25 June 2007.

Psychiatrist Dr. Frederick K. Goodwin, host to the popular radio program The Infinite Mind, has lost his radio hosting job after Senator Charles E. Grassley revealed that he had received $1.3 million from pharmaceutical companies during the period 2000-2007. Dr. Goodwin used to be director of the National Institute of Mental Health. How widespread this practice has been among media figures is unclear, as Dr. Goodwin is just the first one to be investigated.

AstraZeneca today announced that the once-daily formulation SEROQUEL XR™ (quetiapine fumarate extended release tablets) and SEROQUEL® (quetiapine fumarate) have been approved via the Mutual Recognition Procedure for new indications in bipolar disorder. SEROQUEL XR and SEROQUEL have been approved for treatment of major depressive episodes in bipolar disorder. Additionally, SEROQUEL XR has been approved for treatment of moderate to severe manic episodes in bipolar disorder.

Repligen Initiates Phase 2b Clinical Trial Of RG2417 In Bipolar Disorder
Repligen Corporation (Nasdaq: RGEN) announced that the Company has initiated a Phase 2b clinical trial to evaluate the use of RG2417, an oral formulation of uridine, in patients with bipolar depression. This Phase 2b study is a multi-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in which approximately 150 patients with bipolar depression will receive either RG2417 or placebo twice daily for eight weeks.
